Fisheries Productivity

The fishing industry, particularly in the north-western part of the Black Sea, faces an information void when determining optimal conditions for fishing specific species. This deficit hampers the economic efficiency of fisheries, from individual fishermen to larger industrial fishing conglomerates.

To bridge this gap, a decision support tool has been conceptualised, aimed at delivering critical insights like optimal fishing zones for targeted species. This tool is conceived as an extension of the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) from the SkyFISH project, which identified ideal conditions for specific fish species. This Fishing Suitability Index is a composite metric derived from multiple oceanographic variables, scaled to indicate optimal conditions for targeted species. This innovative tool promises to revolutionise the fishing industry in Bulgaria and Romania, providing fishermen with a much-needed compass to navigate the vast ocean waters more profitably.
