Description

A Short Description of FORTH

Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) is one of the largest research centres of Greece with well-organised facilities and highly qualified staff. FORTH, with its high-quality research results as well as its valuable socioeconomic contribution, is considered one of the top research centres internationally. The Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics (IACM) of FORTH specialises in research on numerical simulation and monitoring of environmental, engineering and physiological processes. The priority of IACM is to conduct basic and applied research, by developing and applying mathematical methods and tools for modelling and solving complex scientific problems and provide research and technological services to universities, the government and the industry. Current and future research directions of IACM cover the fields of Computational fluid mechanics; Environmental and engineering flows simulation; Environmental data collection, archiving and processing; Climate research; Geoinformatics; Marine Environmental Research; Marine acoustics; Image processing; HPC applications. IACM's visibility in the related EU and worldwide scientific community is high, accredited by numerous collaborations with renowned research institutions and a remarkable share in research funds, including partnerships in several H2020 projects.

The Coastal & Marine Research Laboratory (CMRL) was established in 2006. The research of CMRL focuses in modelling and computational methods for fluid dynamics and wave propagation, and the integrated study of the coastal environment (atmospheric, terrestrial and marine), the development of state-of-art scientific research in understanding and modelling the hydrodynamics and geomorphologics of the coupled coastal and marine environment. This is achieved by collection of accurate, reliable and of high temporal and spatial resolution data, processed by modern data analytics techniques – them being actually big data sets - and smart assimilation techniques developed, which increases the resolution of the models used. Specific applications refer to: risk assessment, resilience development and adaptation related to the impact of climate change on the coastal zone; ocean prediction; marine pollution monitoring and forecasting; coastal zone survey; understanding the Land - Sea - Air interaction by the use of combined field surveys and numerical modelling; data collection, processing and archiving for the coastal areas at regional level; study of long waves and coastal flooding; tsunamis risk; development of inversion methods for the recovery of structure and composition of the sea floor from acoustic data; GIS applications and spatial statistical modelling; the study of underwater acoustics and its applications to oceanography and geophysics. CMRL has participated in several R&D and EU funded research projects with major research institutes in Europe and worldwide and closely collaborates with the Region of Crete, and other regional state agencies, and stakeholders, providing consulting and services. CMRL is a member of MONGOOS network, MEDSLIK-II developers consortium, European (ERIHS) and national (HELLAS-CH) infrastructure on Cultural Heritage. The Lab provides operational forecasting of various essential ocean variables for Crete, by implementing advanced numerical hydrodynamic and sea state models (POM, WAM 4.5.4, MEDSLIK-II).

Role In Project

The main role and tasks allocated to FORTH in Iliad

FORTH will participate in various WPs and Tasks in the project related to modelling activities (ML model training, models validation and operational forecasting, machine learning and AI algorithms and data acquisition (WP2 & WP5) and developing digital twin services for shipping and ports, oil and gas, and marine renewables (WP1, WP6, WP7). FORTH will also lead a task in WP8 (Policy impact facility) and be involved in dissemination tasks (WP11), capacity building & training (WP10).
