The EU-funded Iliad project for a digital twin of the ocean is holding a series of webinars on March 8th, 9th, and 10th, starting at 15:00 (CET) each day, focusing on the contribution of citizen science to digital twins of the ocean.
The Iliad Digital Twin of the Ocean will fuse a large volume of diverse data to enable simultaneous communication with real-world systems and models. The combination of geovisualisation, immersive visualisation and virtual or augmented reality allows users to explore, synthesise, present, and analyse the underlying geospatial data in a seamless, real-time interactive manner.
The first webinar, on March 8th, will include an introduction to citizen science in the context of digital twins of the ocean, using a range of real-world examples illustrating citizen science and related concepts.
The second day of the webinar will focus on opportunities and challenges for marine citizen science, and the third day of the webinar will consist of a case-led exploration of citizen science for digital twins of the ocean, including a discussion of the potential for increasing citizen involvement in the Iliad digital ocean twins.
'Digital twins of the environment need large volumes of data and often combine diverse data from a variety of sources. While citizen science has been mentioned as a potential data source for digital twins, the full potential of citizen science in this context has yet to be fully realised', the webinar organisers explained.
Through the webinar, the Iliad project team aims to explore the potential contribution of citizen science to the creation of digital twins of the ocean, as well as how both citizen scientists and the wider public at large can benefit from such digital twins.
The webinar series is aimed at ocean scientists and modellers who would like to learn more about citizen science and how it can be applied to gathering additional data for constructing digital twins of the ocean, as well as other interested stakeholders.
