Iliad invited to sit on a panel to discuss the European Digital Twins of the Ocean at the 1st Annual Forum for the EU Mission Ocean
The EU-funded Iliad project was invited to sit on a panel to discuss the European Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs) at the 1st Annual Forum for the EU Mission Ocean - Restore our oceans and waters by 2030.
Mission Ocean held its first Annual forum on 17th February 2023 in Brussels. It is one of five EU Missions that provide a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges. They have ambitious goals and will deliver concrete results by 2030.
Mission Ocean is the EU Mission 'Restore our Ocean and Waters' that aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement, and blue investment by 2030. The Mission’s new approach will address the ocean and waters as one and will play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature. Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs) will provide one of the key cross-cutting actions that support the objectives.
The first annual forum provided an opportunity to bring together key stakeholders and to review the first year of implementation of the Mission, showcasing the first portfolio of projects and actions to achieve its objectives. The event focused on the commitments to implement the Mission and illustrate concrete measures and actions to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, boost coastal resilience, eliminate pollution, and make the blue economy climate-neutral and circular, as well as recommend further necessary initiatives.
Bente Bye, (partner of the Iliad project) sat on the panel of experts, together with Pierre Bahurel, EU DTO core infrastructure, CEO of Mercator Ocean International, Eoin O’Grady, Irish DTO application, Marine Institute, and David Bassett, user perspective EU DTO services, Gen Sec EATiP. The panel set out the visions and status of the European Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs).
In her talk, Bente provided the Iliad project perspectives on how our thematic and local twins support the EU missions to restore our ocean and waters. She presented a series of co-design and co-created concepts of Pilot Digital Twins (DTs) to represent our diverse seas. The Pilot DTs are under development as part of the Iliad project and are expected to be available to stakeholders from February 2024 through the new Iliad DTO Marketplace.
