Iliad Webinar Series - Connecting ocean digital twins using federated system approaches in Iliad

The Copernicus Marine 7th General Assembly will be held in Brussel (and online sessions will be provided) from 5th to 9th June 2023. 

Throughout this week, working groups consisting of partners and contractors will come together to develop strategies for the upcoming years.

##### Days 1 & 2: plenary sessions - Hybrid session open to the public.

The first two days of the event will consist of plenary sessions:

##### Day 1: 5 June
- It will focus on presenting the main achievements accomplished in 2022 and the roadmap for the upcoming years.
- Another session will cover innovation activities including the Research & Development programme linked with Horizon Europe and the User Engagement program.
- Additionally, 2023 will focus on the Coastal and Arctics thematic hubs, providing an opportunity to present its strategy and showcase the inputs given by member states.
- From 7 to 8:30 pm, as an introduction of the evening social event, high-level keynote presentations of the Misson Ocean, the Digital Twin Ocean and the Copernicus Marine Service will be held.

##### Day 2: 6 June
- It will be dedicated to the production centers where the Copernicus Marine European partners and contractors will present their accomplishments and future plans.
- The afternoon will focus on the community of marine data users, which comprises nearly 50 000 users. This will be an opportunity to present the improvements in terms of user tools and services, as well as provide a platform to user testimonies. This will showcase how the Copernicus Marine data portfolio is utilised to develop applications and projects in numerous sectors of the Blue Economy, with a particular focus on policy makers in a time of Climate change  where sound decisions for the future of the Ocean are critical.

##### Days 3 to 5 – Thematic working groups - Contractors only

From 7th to 9th June, partners and contractors will convene to discuss various topics related to marine data processing with a strong commitment to enhancing the Copernicus Marine offer and provide subscribers with the latest  Ocean Data’ portfolio.

Copernicus Marine 7th General Assembly

Sponsored by <a href="https://ieeeoes.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society</a> and <a href="https://www.mtsociety.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Marine Technology Society</a>, <a href="https://limerick23.oceansconference.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">OCEANS 2023</a> will take place in Limerick, Ireland between 5th - 8th June 2023. This annual event will focus on gathering industry experts, global thought leaders, and engineers to discuss new research and innovation in relation to marine technology, engineering, science, education, and research.

The aim of the meeting is for experts to exchange knowledge on the topics of science, engineering, and technology in the context of research, operations, and development related to all aquatic environments. A wide range of professionals from various fields will contribute their knowledge through networking opportunities and sessions, with the aim of collaborating in the development of addressing environmental concerns and policies affecting marine technology and engineering.

There will be a particular emphasis on sensing, exploring, understanding, using, developing, and responsibly managing natural resources. This will be discussed within the context of the development of innovative capabilities and technologies through prototypes, testing and operational systems.

OCEANS 2023 Limerick

The <a href="https://www.aslo.org/palma-2023/" target="_blank">ASLO Aquatic Sciences Meeting 2023</a> will take place on 4–9 June 2023 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. 

The event will delve into the captivating concepts of resilience and recovery, exploring their application not only in aquatic ecosystems but also in societies facing disruptions and crises.

With past events showcasing the importance of adaptability and decisiveness,  these have been recognised as key factors for building resilience and facilitating recovery. Disruptions present unique opportunities for strategic management and recovery planning. 

At the ASLO 2023 Aquatic Sciences Meeting, the theme of resilience and recovery will be emphasised in aquatic systems through engaging plenary sessions. 

**Iliad Participation**

Iliad expert, Luigi Ceccaroni (<a href="https://earthwatch.org.uk/" target="_blank">Earthwatch Europe</a>) will present a poster entitled, "Opportunities and barriers for citizen science in the development of digital twins of the ocean" on the 6th June 2023. The poster, part of the Scientific Sessions > SS058 Citizen Science in Aquatic Ecology: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Society While Assuring Sound Data for Science and Conservation, will explore the potential for citizen science to contribute to creating digital twins of the ocean and how citizen scientists can benefit from these DTOs.

ASLO Aquatic Sciences Meeting 2023

The <a href="https://commission.europa.eu/index_en" target="_blank">European Commission</a>, in close cooperation with the <a href="https://www.governo.it/en" target="_blank">Italian government</a>, the Sicily Region, the <a href="https://www.unipa.it/" target="_blank">University of Palermo</a> and with the support of the <a href="https://bluemissionmed.eu/" target="_blank">BlueMissionMed</a> Co-ordination and Support Action, will organise the high-level event <a href="https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/restore-our-ocean-and-waters/mission-restore-our-ocean-and-waters-2030-mediterranean-lighthouse-action-2023-05-30_en" target="_blank">Mission“Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”: The Mediterranean lighthouse in action</a> in Palermo (30-31 May).

The event will be an opportunity to witness the political commitments of the Mediterranean countries towards the <a href="https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/funding/funding-opportunities/funding-programmes-and-open-calls/horizon-europe/eu-missions-horizon-europe/restore-our-ocean-and-waters_en" target="_blank">EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters</a> and to present the actions and initiatives which contribute to the Mission objectives that may be scaled up and replicated in other sea basins. 

The event will welcome stakeholders from the Mediterranean basin, international and sea basin intergovernmental organisations as well as representatives from regions, cities, ports, islands, shipping, industries, academia, education, researchers, investors, NGOs, citizens and youth.
 
The programme will include demonstrations of EU projects contributing to the Mission’s objectives, as well as a Blue Islands Day ceremony, with exchanges of best practices, awards to islands championing the Mission and with strong participation from youth and blue schools.

Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and waters by 2030’- The Mediterranean lighthouse in action

<p>The 2023 edition of the <a href="https://maritime-day.ec.europa.eu/index_en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Maritime Day</a> will be held in person between 24th - 25th May 2023, located in Brest, France.</p>
<p>EMD has been described as the place where ‘Ocean Leaders Meet’. EMD is an interactive event aimed at business professionals, governments, NGOs, public institutions, and academics.</p>
<p>The focus of this event will be issues related to the blue economy, the marine environment, and discussions on future advancements. This will be addressed by a wide range of speakers through thematic sessions, stakeholder workshops, and project pitch sessions.</p>

**Iliad Participation**

Iliad expert, <a href="https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/author/37273243800" target="_blank">René Garello (IEEE)</a> will showcase the Iliad Digital Twins of the Ocean at the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2023 as part of the EU Digital Twin of the ocean exhibition. René will present the overall concept of the Iliad digital twins of the ocean, the portfolio of thematic and local digital twins of the ocean, the marketplace, and integration and use of citizen science to solve ocean related challenges within the project.

**About René Garello**

*Professor Emeritus at IMT Atlantique, Life Fellow IEEE, Past President (2013-2016) IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, President IEEE France Section, and Director of the Scientific Interest Group Bretagne Télédétection (Brittany Remote Sensing).*

René's main research interests lie in Remote Sensing, 2D signal processing, statistical and spectral analysis applied to ocean surface features detection and characterisation. For the last two decades, he has worked in the development of signal and image processing tools for the interpretation of satellite signals and the extraction of sea surface features, either natural (wind, waves, currents) or manmade (ships, oil pollution, marine debris). These application fields were supported by several European projects and industrial contracts. He is presently engaged in initiatives on the topic of Marine Debris and Plastic in the oceans, and in several EU projects for IEEE.

European Maritime Day 2023

Organised by International Astronautical Federation ([IAF](https://www.iafastro.org/)) and hosted by Norwegian Space Agency ([NOSA](https://www.romsenter.no/eng)), [the Global Space Conference On Climate Change 2023](https://www.iafastro.org/events/global-series-conferences/gloc-2023/) entitled ‘Fire and Ice – Space for Climate Action’ will take place in Oslo, Norway between 23rd - 25th May 2023.

This conference will focus on promoting international development and the exchange of knowledge on topics directly related to climate change in the context of space-based applications and services.
