Abstract

Arne J. Berre, Chief Scientist at SINTEF Digital and Innovation Director at the Norwegian Center for AI Innovation (NorwAI)

The Iliad – Digital Twins of the Ocean project is part of a larger initiative on Digital Twins of the Earth - through the European Destination Earth program and Green Deal, and also related to the UN Ocean Decade 2020-2030 DITTO program on Digital Twins of the Ocean and the European Digital Twin of the Ocean. The Turtle initiative within DITTO focuses on interoperability among multiple Digital Twins and supporting systems. The talk presents the Iliad project in the context of this wider picture and discusses the related Digital Twins of the Ocean pilots and application areas as well as challenges and approaches to support interoperability of both geospatial/spatial temporal Digital Twins and asset-oriented Digital Twins. To realize its potential, the Iliad Digital Twins of the Ocean will follow a System of Systems approach, integrating the plethora of existing EU Earth observing and modelling digital infrastructures and facilities, using a Digital Twins pipeline architecture and relate to various interoperability frameworks. To promote additional applications through Iliad Digital Twins of the Ocean, the partners will create the Iliad Marketplace, included a market for geosciences related applications and services. Like an app store, providers will use the Iliad Marketplace to distribute apps, plug-ins, interfaces, raw data, citizen science data, synthesized information, and value-adding services derived from the Iliad Digital Twins of the Ocean. It will also be an efficient way for scientists and other users to discover and find relevant applications and services.
